5 out of 5 stars Perfect!   November 21, 2009

I just bought this HDD and it delivered yesterday. Since then I have transferred hundreds of MBs of stuff onto it no problem. It was easy to use (as stated in the review above, just plug in and play). For someone like me who doesn't have a clue about technology, it is perfect. It is also excellent value as I paid roughly the same amount as my friend did on a HDD half the size. Furthermore, small lightweight and stylish. Couldn't be better!

5 out of 5 stars A nice little USB powered backup drive   November 21, 2009

I'm a fanatical backer upper and this 320Gb Toshiba looked ideal for holding multiple data backups - I like having a series of older backups just in case and all our music, photos etc now take up 60Gb and growing. With this drive I'll be able to keep 4 or so generations of data backups. I also synchronise our desktop and laptop data and emails across the local network and mirror the system partitions to another external drive - and backup photos etc online.

The Toshiba drive looks good, is pretty small and gets its power through the single USB plug - no separate power block or 2nd USB plug. I plugged it in and Windows 7 quickly sorted out the drivers. On the disk is a 458 page pdf manual but luckily only the first 20 are in English. The main thing to remember is to safely remove the drive in Windows (so it parks its read/write heads away from the data area). Strangely the manual says the drive is only for Windows XP or Vista. Well it's fine with Windows 7, although I didn't try installing the supplied backup software - NTI Backup Now EZ. That will do a complete system (mirror) backup and create a bootable CD but I use Paragon software and another external drive for that. For data backups I much prefer just copying all our data folders across. The drive comes formatted as FAT32 so it should work with Macs too if you forget the NTI software. There was also some McAfee trial software which I swiftly deleted. I also got rid of a couple of autorun files that kept trying to install the NTI package.

In use the drive is virtually silent and runs very cool. Writing to it from Windows 7 achieved nearly 1Gb per minute, which is fine. Safely remove worked well with Windows 7 as well as Vista (which refuses to release a little Trekstor drive but is fine with the Toshiba). The drive still spins after the "Safe to remove" message but I guess its heads fall safely when it's unplugged. So as long as your USB ports supply enough power (ie the computer isn't too old) this is an excellent and well priced little backup drive, especially if you want to use the backup software included.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, easy to set up, smart looking, large capacity.   November 23, 2009

This is such a smart piece of kit.
Take it out of the box, connect it to your USB2 drive, and use!
There is a fair amount of 'stuff' already on the drive - known as 'bloatware' I am informed by a chum of mine in IT - samples of anti-virus software and so on, but I just deleted it all and started saving my stuff.
500Gb is plenty big enough for all but the most dedicated film maker or video downloader, and should even keep them happy for a good long time. For most average users I reckon you will be able to keep adding stuff to this for a few years to come before it is full.
It took just over a hour to back up my existing external 40Gb hard drive onto this one, using the USB2 cable - supplied - with both the drives running in the background.
It is very quiet - pocket sized - and quite snazzy looking in bright red and black plastic.
It has two rubber ridges on the base, to stop it slipping along the desktop, and also I suspect to help keep it cool. That said, it runs very cool indeed, with no sign of heat at all from this model, even after a long, hard transfer.
I would certainly buy another one of these - if the one I've got ever gets full.

5 out of 5 stars Works straight out of the box   December 20, 2009

Have recently filled my old 160GB HP external hard drive I was looking for a quality replacement - and the Toshiba 500GB doesn't disappoint.

The Toshiba drive is small, well-built and works straight out of the box. My PC detected the drive instantly and I began the back-up process - first using a straight file transfer, then experimenting with the EZ software it comes with.

Overall I'm pretty impressed - this looks like a quality piece of kit that will last. No massive noise or heating up evident yet.

Of course, the first back-up takes quite a while but you just let it run and then the subsequent ones just happen briefly and in the background. Very happy with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Great piece of kit; Mac compatible too   April 11, 2010

Very, very impressive. Small, solid build, nice design. Almost completely silent in operation. Decent speed - slightly faster than my 1Tb Western Digital 3.5in HDD, in fact. Running off a single USB port for power is a real boon for laptop use.

Despite what the description implies, this drive works perfectly well with a Mac. The bundled software won't, obviously, but it's just the usual pointless crapware and can cheerfully be deleted.
